UK: Updating the Charity Governance Code

The Steering Group responsible for the Charity Governance Code has announced that it proposes "a light 'refresh'" of the Code in 2020 and more extensive changes in 2023. A route map is being developed for the changes intended for 2023. Further information is available here.

Ireland: a governance code for charities

The Charities Regulator has announced that it will, later this year, publish a governance code for charities: see here (pdf). The creation of such a code was one of the principal recommendations made in the Report of the Consultative Panel on the Governance of Charitable Organisations (here, pdf).

UK: the new charity governance code - an update

A consultation began last year in respect of proposed changes to the code of governance for the voluntary and community sector: see here. The steering group leading the review proposed, amongst other things, that the code should be renamed the "Charity Governance Code". The consultation period has now closed and the steering group is now drafting the new code. Meanwhile, a summary of the consultation responses has been published: see here (pdf).

Ireland: new code for community, voluntary and charitable organisations

Towards the end of last year an updated governance code for community, voluntary and charitable organisations was published by the Governance Code Working Group: see here (pdf). The new code, which is divided into versions for three types of organisation (small, medium and large), is accompanied by a set of stewardship guidelines: see here (pdf).

UK: consultation on new charity sector governance code for England and Wales

A consultation began earlier this month in respect of proposed changes to the code of governance for the voluntary and community sector: see here. It is proposed that the code should be renamed the "Charity Governance Code" (it is currently titled "Good Governance: a Code for the Voluntary and Community Sector"). A copy of the proposed new code, which will operate on the basis of 'apply or explain', is available here (pdf, English) and here (pdf, Welsh). Other changes are designed to place greater emphasis on board diversity and the role of the chair in promoting good governance.
