UK National Statistics has published a bulletin containing the results of its survey of the ownership of ordinary shares in UK quoted companies at 31 December 2008: see
here (
pdf). The survey reports that 41.5% of shares on this date were beneficially owned by investors outside of the UK. It also reports that individual ownership by UK investors (as opposed to ownership by, e.g., insurance companies, pension funds and banks) had fallen to 10.2% (it was 54% in 1963).
